Ballet Cat: The Totally Secret Secret - Bob Shea







Ballet Cat and Sparkles the Pony are trying to decide what to play today. Nothing that Sparkles suggests--making crafts, playing checkers, and selling lemonade--goes well with the leaping, spinning, and twirling that Ballet Cat likes to do. When Sparkles's leaps, spins, and twirls seem halfhearted, Ballet Cat asks him what's wrong. Sparkles doesn't want to say. He has a secret that Ballet Cat won't want to hear. What Sparkles doesn't know is that Ballet Cat has a secret of her own, a totally secret secret. Once their secrets are shared, will their friendship end, or be stronger than ever?



I am in love. Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great seemed like it would be impossible to beat, and I don't know that it has been. But it has most definitely been matched in many ways with this new book by Bob Shea. Ballet Cat features a cat and a pony, and the two friends are trying to figure out what to do. The pony doesn't know how to share his secret secret with his friend, the cat though he does... eventually. Shea manages to give significant emotional charge to his characters with only a few thick black lines, and this book will not disappoint. I feel like this book will find a large audience, between the fabulous illustrations and the adorable story. Vibrant colors and minimalist page layouts will delight young readers, while the subtle dialogue will resonate with older children and adult readers.

The Totally Secret Secret is a fantastic new book from Bob Shea, and it is not to be missed, especially if you're a fan of his Unicorn book!

The Living  recently received an Honor from the Pura Belpré committee. The award recognizes of a work which best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth. Girls Like Us - Gail Giles

I have now gone out and made sure that I have all of the books longlisted for the National Book Award. I read and reviewed a number of these previously, so now I have five left to read and review. This is one of those five (but would I expect anything less from the fabulous team at Candlewick?) Girls Like Us  is a unique novel in a number of respects, most notably in the fact that both protagonists are identified (and self-identified) as mentally disabled in some way. Biddy has a learning disability that she was born with, while Quincy is a young girl who is disabled due to the fact that her mother's boyfriend hit her in the head with a brick, disfiguring her and damaging her brain. Once the two girls graduate from school, they move into a house together, becoming caregivers for both each other and an older woman, Elizabeth.
