Patina - Jason Reynolds


Patina, or Patty, runs like a flash. She runs for many reasons—to escape the taunts from the kids at the fancy-schmancy new school she’s been sent to since she and her little sister had to stop living with their mom. She runs from the reason WHY she’s not able to live with her “real” mom any more: her mom has The Sugar, and Patty is terrified that the disease that took her mom’s legs will one day take her away forever. So Patty’s also running for her mom, who can’t. But can you ever really run away from any of this? As the stress builds up, it’s building up a pretty bad attitude as well. Coach won’t tolerate bad attitude. No day, no way. And now he wants Patty to run relay…where you have to depend on other people? How’s she going to do THAT?

"My name is Patina Jones. And I ain't no junk. I also ain't no hair flipper. And most of the girls at Chester Academy are hair flippers who be looking at me like my mom some kind of junk maker. But ain't not of them got guts to come out of their mouths with no craziness. They just turn and flip their dingy ponytails toward me like I care. Tuh."
I won't say Jason Reynolds can do no wrong, but he's certainly kicking butt where middle-grade and YA literature are concerned! He's won debut author awards, best fiction awards, and has given incredible talks about black kids in all manner of situations (just look at Ghost vs All American Boys vs The Boy in the Black Suit, etc.) His writing is swift, entertaining, complex, and incredibly timely.

Patina the second book after Ghost follows Patty and her struggles running while getting used to a new school full of, well, less than "woke" individuals. But pressure starts to build up as she works to take care of her sister, her mother, and also become a number one star on her track team.

Fans of Reynolds' previous books will totally fall in love with Patty as she works hard to make her family proud and show her peers how strong she can be.

    Enjoyed this book soooo much! Love the conflicts in Patty's life. Love how she deals with the hair flippers too. Patina has a very supportive, fun, and fighter-like personality. Thank you Jason Reynolds for sharing your wonderful writing with us.

The Living  recently received an Honor from the Pura Belpré committee. The award recognizes of a work which best portrays the Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for children or youth. Girls Like Us - Gail Giles

I have now gone out and made sure that I have all of the books longlisted for the National Book Award. I read and reviewed a number of these previously, so now I have five left to read and review. This is one of those five (but would I expect anything less from the fabulous team at Candlewick?) Girls Like Us  is a unique novel in a number of respects, most notably in the fact that both protagonists are identified (and self-identified) as mentally disabled in some way. Biddy has a learning disability that she was born with, while Quincy is a young girl who is disabled due to the fact that her mother's boyfriend hit her in the head with a brick, disfiguring her and damaging her brain. Once the two girls graduate from school, they move into a house together, becoming caregivers for both each other and an older woman, Elizabeth.
